More than 40 years after its release, a Commodore 64 is still at the helm in this bakery.
The best-selling personal computer of all time hasn't quite finished its career, so it's picking up the bill... in doughnuts!
For several days now, this has been the news that intrigues or amuses, depending on one's sensibility. In the United States, Hilligoss Bakery - located in Brownsburg, not far from Indianapolis, Indiana - stands out not for the pastries it prepares for the festive season, or for the various services it might render its customers. No, if this bakery has been in the news lately, it's because of its payment system, and we're not here to talk about buying croissants with Bitcoin.

Indeed, as surprising as it may seem, Hilligoss Bakery still operates its cash register using a C64 computer. Yes, the very same one that Commodore launched in 1982 and that the American firm produced until 1994, even though the beast had long since been supplanted by numerous other machines. Despite a display limited to 320 x 200 pixels in 16 colors, the machine seems to be sufficient for the needs of bakery managers.
The news isn't exactly new... and back in 2010, we were already talking about this exception that uses an old 8-bit computer to cash in its customers. Of course, what was surprising in 2010 is even more surprising today... 14 years later. It just goes to show that you don't always need a state-of-the-art device to carry out your day-to-day tasks. It's worth noting that the screen attached to the C64 isn't a vintage model either!
